Weekly Update - Indonesia

Indonesia

Protests continue across the nation as the Job Creation Law, aka the “Omnibus” bill, was signed on November 2, 2020 by President Joko Widodo and Minister of Law and Human Rights.

Workers’ unions and activists are calling for nation-wide demonstrations between November 5 and 13, 2020. The Alliance of the Workers’ Movement with the People (GEBRAK) also have called for protests in 60 cities. The Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions (or KSPI) representing 32 labour unions on Monday also held a mass rally attended by thousands of workers near the Presidential Palace and Constitutional Court in Jakarta. At the end of the rally, these labor union representatives delivered a written statement to the Constitutional Court demanding for a judicial review of the Job Creation Law and urging the government to pay attention to the Indonesian workers’ concerns and aspirations. The KSPI President in a statement also demands the revocation of the new law which amended 79 previous laws that would hurt workers’ rights by reducing severance pay, removing restrictions on manual labour by foreign workers, increasing the use of outsourcing and converting monthly salaries to hourly wages.
