Weekly Update - Thailand

Thailand

The People’s Party leaders in a statement dated November 4, 2020 refused to join the government’s reconciliation committee as they believed it was a stalling tactic to buy time for Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. In response to the media the following day, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said Parliament President Chuan Leekpai would invite four former prime ministers to join this proposed committee and whether the protesters choose to participate or not, the reconciliation committee would move ahead. He said one day he hoped the protesters would come to accept it. Observers couldn’t help but wonder with whom the Thai government is trying to reconcile when none of the protesters is present at the table. The protesters are adamant that as long as Prime Minister Prayut is still leading the country, they would not trust this government and would not participate in the reconciliation committee. They reaffirm their 3 demands for his resignation, constitutional and monarchy reforms.
